  • Jason Laroche, a Council Bluffs man who was homeless and struggled with panic attacks and depression, got help from Heartland Family Service in 2018 — he now works there as a peer support specialist using his art and personal experience to help others.  WOWT
  • More than 100 volunteers from National Indemnity and Berkshire Hathaway partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Council Bluffs during Rock the Block to overhaul homes on Second and Third avenues between Ninth—boosting neighborhood living conditions.  The Daily Nonpareil

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Council Bluffs soybean farmers have been hit by the trade war that cut off roughly 30% of their Chinese market, leaving them with a large surplus and rising storage fees—David Thien said these higher costs have squeezed their profits.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska Omaha will launch the Nebraska Cyber Matrix this month at the Peter Kiewit Institute to train seven cybersecurity students to fight new hacking threats—using a $14 million grant from the Weitz Family Foundation. The program will also let local businesses hire these trained students to secure their systems and help graduates start working from day one.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, voters in Council Bluffs and Carter Lake held a primary election and unofficial results showed four Council Bluffs city council candidates advanced + incumbent Steve Gorman, Cole Button, Jessica Marie Vanderpool, and Ryan Garrison, with the mayoral race led by incumbent Matthew Walsh and Jill Shudak. In Carter Lake, results revealed that four candidates will move on to the general election with incumbent Jacleen Wahl in the lead while Keebie Kessler and Matthew Seminara are tied with four votes and incumbent Victor Skinner and Timothy Mandolfo tied with three votes.  KETV
