COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The community is invited to join the annual Hands Across the Bridge event on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to mark National Recovery Month today at 10 a.m.—participants will lock hands to show their support.  The Daily Nonpareil

  • Union Pacific Railroad Museum will host three author talks this autumn, starting later this month, featuring local and national writers + the museum will announce more details soon.  The Daily Nonpareil

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Joseph Thornburg, a local small business owner, announced he is running for Council Bluffs City Council—he plans to use his business experience to serve local residents.  The Daily Nonpareil
  • Council Bluffs police have launched CBPD Watch—an interactive dashboard that displays calls for service nearly in real time while masking specific details to protect privacy; the desktop version shows a year of data and the mobile app shows the past eight hours. The department developed the tool after community surveys and will add more historical data and host monthly webinars in the coming months.  KETV
  • Council Bluffs paramedic Benjamin Larson is running for City Council to show that everyone can join public service — he says his campaign will encourage local volunteer efforts.  The Daily Nonpareil
  • The City of Council Bluffs started a new outreach program this week to help community members experiencing homelessness—designed to connect them with essential services.  The Daily Nonpareil
  • Since July 1, Iowa State Patrol troopers have pulled over 4,569 drivers for breaking the Hands-Free law — they issued warnings that will change to fines after January 1. Troopers say educating drivers with options like Bluetooth and phone mounts aims to cut crash risks as fatality numbers dropped by 10 compared to the same period last year.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former Pottawattamie officer Shawna McClure recalled the day she could not save fellow officer Kerrie Orozco in 2015 and how she battled deep depression plus guilt until she found help through counseling and a first responder support program. She now serves on the Council Bluffs chapter board for the First Responders Foundation and is studying for a master’s degree in clinical and mental health counseling to guide others in crisis.  The Daily Nonpareil
