EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Iowa public universities have asked for no increase in general funding for fiscal year 2027 so that UI, ISU and UNI keep their usual funds while seeking extra dollars for targeted programs (UI wants $3.6 million for rural medicine, ISU requests $3.6 million for ag tech, and UNI seeks funds for nursing and tuition expansion). The total request is over $503.8 million to serve more than 70,000 students (over 40% from out-of-state) and the Iowa Board of Regents will vote on the proposals on Sept. 18. The Daily Nonpareil

- ➤ Heartland Family Service did not apply for a HUD grant because new federal rules on location and policy do not match its project for permanent supportive housing. The updated grant—due next Friday with funding ending at the end of the month—requires projects to be in areas that ban homeless encampments, enforce federal immigration rules, and disallow promoting that sex is chosen.
