  • Big Brothers Big Sisters — through MentorU — seeks volunteer mentors for high school students at Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson, pairing them with supportive role models.   • Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Des Moines received a $5,000 grant from the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa—supporting its domestic violence and sexual assault program.  The Daily Nonpareil

CRIME NEWS

  • A Percival man was arrested on July 2 for allegedly throwing a steel pickup hitch ball through a semi truck window on 195th Avenue near I-29 North—local authorities reported his initial court appearance is set for 9 a.m. July 23.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Severe thunderstorms swept through Council Bluffs and nearby Nebraska counties early Thursday morning, causing 142 outages locally and 239 in Douglas—154 in Sarpy—449 in Pawnee counties while crews work to restore power with no timeline set.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, with help from Council Bluffs Police Department and Council Bluffs Fire Department, launched Project Lifesaver on July 10 to help quickly locate residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism or other conditions using a small battery-powered transmitter—trained first responders now can track them in 30 minutes if they wander.  Pottawattamie County
  • Audrey Chapin retires today after 45 years of service with the Auditor's Office in Pottawattamie County, where she started as a part-time clerk at Thomas Jefferson High School and became the Payroll Benefits Specialist trusted by local citizens during elections. She now looks forward to spending more time with family (planning trips and reading) as County Auditor Mary Ann Hanusa praises her lasting contributions.  Pottawattamie County
