COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pottawattamie County employees brought energy to the Celebrate CB Parade on May 10 as they handed out candy and friendship bracelets in a 1970s style—joining 86 entries viewed by more than 10,000 spectators. Other county events during the week included Pancakes in the Park at Bayliss Park and an Ag Committee cookout fundraiser that supported local college scholarships.  Pottawattamie County
  • The Celebrate CB parade took place on May 10 and featured many local moments such as breakfast served by Pancake Man, a school award marked by a golden squirrel trophy, police handing out stickers, and community groups offering American flags & appearances by Mayor Matt Walsh and Parade Grand Marshal Dick Miller.  The Daily Nonpareil

  • Today, Pottawattamie County honors law enforcement during National Police Week as a Candlelight Vigil is held to remember fallen officers and Peace Officers Memorial Day is set for May 15 when flags will be lowered and the courthouse is lit blue until May 17—these measures echo the county’s tribute to local officers including the five who lost their lives while on duty.  Pottawattamie County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Regional Water has issued a boil advisory for Avoca and nearby rural areas in Pottawattamie County due to water outages from drought and high demand that caused a pressure drop on May 10. Officials are repressurizing the system — they will test for bacteria — and residents must boil water before drinking or cooking until further notice.  Pottawattamie County
  • The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors proclaimed May as Meth Prevention Month to raise awareness about the serious risks of meth use in the community. Heartland Family Service supported the decision—its 423 staff members work to promote education and early intervention to lessen these impacts.  Pottawattamie County
  • Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors declared May as Mental Health Awareness Month to reduce stigma and promote mental health as one in five Iowa adults faces challenges—residents are encouraged to wear green on May 15 and see the county courthouse lit green from May 18 to 31. Earlier efforts like Chalk the Town Green in Council Bluffs have also aimed to spark community support for mental well-being.  Pottawattamie County
