On Arbor Day 2024, the Sturgeon family in Elkhorn survived an EF-4 tornado that struck their home when they could not move their quadriplegic father from the upstairs bedroom—crucifixes and a picture of the Virgin Mary were found intact on the walls.

They will move into a nearly complete, ADA-accessible new home this summer—which features a wheelchair ramp, wider doors and a reinforced storm shelter—to provide safer exits during future storms.
