Striving for Solutions at Council Bluffs Railroad Crossings Town Hall

In Council Bluffs, a second community town hall was held by United Today, Stronger Tomorrow and Concerned Citizens of Pottawattamie County on December 17, 2024, to address the ongoing problem of blocked railroad crossings. Around 25 residents, including the Mayor Matt Walsh, discussed their grievances and sought solutions for ensuring 24/7 access to their neighborhoods, which are often isolated by stopped trains. Despite challenges in negotiation with Union Pacific Railroad and the potential costs of installing a warning system named Trainfo, the groups laid out a multifaceted strategy focusing on local, state, and federal levels of engagement. They also aim to enforce a rarely applied Iowa law that prohibits trains from blocking crossings for more than 10 minutes.

Thousands of Iowans start their day with Good Day Council Bluffs

“Reading the newsletter has become a really positive daily habit for me. I read it while drinking my coffee and planning the day. It saves me a ton of time, but it's really enjoyable too. It's great to have the news filtered down to just a handful of critical events everyday that actually matters to me. I also like reading the community profiles. They interview people locally like teachers, politicians, and small business owners. It's hard to find this anywhere else.”

“I'm a senior citizen here in Council Bluffs, and this newsletter is like a lifeline. I don't have the attention span these days to read the paper, and Facebook is a mess. This newsletter keeps me informed, without taking the whole day from me.”

“I like how this newsletter keeps me connected with our community. It's great to have a dedicated source that focuses on what's going on locally. So many news companies are focused on huge attention-grabbing national headlines. But, besides the entertainment value, it's not really relevant to my day-to-day. Also it's great the newsletter is free.”

“I'm a parent, and it's apparent how busy that makes me. I LOVE newspapers (especially the smell), but I never have time to read it anymore. So thank god this newsletter exists, and I can read it in a few minutes. If anything is really critical or catches my eye, I can always spend more time reading into each piece of news, but it isn't usually necessary.”
